Blood in Urine

Blood in the urine, also known as hematuria, can have many causes, including:

    • Urinary tract infection (UTI): A common cause of blood in the urine that can be treated with antibiotics.
    • Kidney infection: A severe kidney infection can lead to dangerous complications, so seek medical care immediately if you have bloody urine and other symptoms like nausea and vomiting.
    • Bladder or kidney stones: These can cause blood in the urine that’s visible to the naked eye or only seen in a lab.
    • Enlarged prostate: A common cause of blood in the urine in men that can be treated with a prescription medicine.
    • Injury: An injury to the bladder or kidney from an accident or sports can cause blood in the urine.
    • Certain medications: Some medicines can cause blood in the urine.
    • Exercise: Heavy exercise can cause blood in the urine, which often goes away in a day.
    • Menstruation: Having a period can cause blood in the urine

Other causes of blood in the urine include:
  • Cancer of the bladder or kidney
  • Inflammation of the bladder, urethra, prostate, or kidney
  • Kidney disease after strep throat
  • Kidney failure
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • A blood disorder

Treatment for blood in the urine depends on the cause. You should see a doctor if you think you have blood in your urine.
